We Built This
October 19 @ 10:00 am - December 9 @ 5:00 pm
An exhibit entitled We Built This will be displayed at the University Galleries located on the campus of NC A&T State University in Greensboro from October 17 to December 9, 2022.
The exhibit was created by Preservation North Carolina as part of a multi-faceted educational program to acknowledge and inform the public of the history and legacy of Black builders and craftspeople in North Carolina. The traveling exhibit highlights the stories of those who constructed and designed many of North Carolina’s most treasured historic sites. Spanning a timeline of more than three centuries, We Built This provides more than two dozen personal profiles and historic context on key topics including slavery and Reconstruction, the founding of HBCUs and Black churches, Jim Crow and segregation, and the rise of Black civic leaders and professionals. Several profiled builders and architects lived in Greensboro and have close associations with NC A&T State University and its architecture program.
This exhibit comes to Greensboro and NC A&T State University through the generosity of Jane and Richard Levy in memory of Edward Loewenstein, Greensboro’s pioneering architect and civil rights ally.
Educational programming related to themes of equity in community, preservation, and architecture is facilitated by a grant from the NC A&T Real Estate Foundation.
The University Gallery hours are:
Monday-Friday 10-5
Saturday by appointment
Visitor parking is located in front of Dudley Hall.
