Walking Wednesdays Tour of the North Carolina A&T State University Campus
June 16, 2021 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
$5
North Carolina A&T State University is the largest historically black college or university in the United States. Founded by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1891, it is one of only two in the state to be established under the provisions of the Morrill Land-Grant Act, and the first for people of color. It is a leader in education and Civil Rights, including its four students, known as the Greensboro Four, who initiated peaceful sit-ins at the Woolworth’s Counter to end segregation. Ever progressive, A&T’s campus has looked to the future for architectural inspiration since the 1960s. Today, the campus contains one of the most daring and innovative collections of modern architecture in the southeast.
Now in our 17th season of tours, Preservation Greensboro’s executive director Benjamin Briggs will review key historical themes and architectural styles found on the campus, including early twentieth century dormitories, mid-twentieth century expansion, and modern additions on a 90-minute tour. The tour will be cancelled in case of rain. Wear comfortable shoes! Meet at the Greensboro Four Monument, located at 266 University Circle.
PARKING: Visitors for the tour will only be able to park in the Laurel Street Garage on N. Obermeyer St, and enter on the E. Market St side (from East Market turn into Laurel St, right on N. Obermeyer St into parking deck). Visitors can only park on the 2nd or 3rd level. The charge is just $1 an hour. To get from the parking deck to the Greensboro Four monument, visitors will get off the elevator of the parking deck and go outside, then turn right, go down the steps, pass the Williams Dining Hall (located on SG Thomas Drive, cross along a campus quad, and go to the left of the A&T University Art Gallery) to go to the monument in front of the Dudley Memorial Building. Visitors who want to park on campus would have to visit the parking office to obtain a daily parking pass three days prior to the event.
