Tour of Historic Homes Patron’s Package Gala and Silent Auction: McAlister Residence
May 19, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
The second of a trio of events that are part of the Patron’s Package in association witht he Tour of Historic Homes & Gardens. In addition to this event, the Package also includes access to all five homes on the tour on May 21-22, 2016, and Sunday Brunch at the Hartmann Residence on May 22.
Commissioned just after completion of Reynolda House in Winston-Salem, the Sarah Little and Alexander Worth McAlister residence shares an eye-catching aesthetic with the Reynolds family landmark. A bright green Ludowici tile roof, clean plaster walls, and a symmetrical facade link the two homes both in scale and in materials. The McAlister residence was constructed in 1918, and represents Philadelphia architect Charles Barton Keen’s second North Carolina commission.
McAlister was a native of Asheboro, and co-founded the Worth Wharton Real Estate and Investment Company in 1890. His business activity led to his founding of Pilot Life Insurance Company, where he served as its president from 1908 until 1931. He was also a civic leader instrumental in the development of North Carolina’s public welfare system, and president of real estate companies that developed the Irving Park and Sedgefield communities in the city.
Patron’s Package tickets may be purchased for $150 through Preservation Greensboro’s offices. Each pass includes three events as well as general tour admission.
