Old Greensborough Walking Tour (Wednesday Evening)
May 23, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Due to a work conflict, this tour is postponed to a future date.
South of the railroad tracks are a variety of shops, galleries, and restaurants that were constructed beginning in the 1870s by Joseph Shields. Named Shieldstown, the street around South Elm Street were lined with brick storefronts sporting ornate iron- and stone-trimmed facades, and elaborate cornices. Today, the neighborhood and adjacent areas are a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood that feature landmark Victorian-Era homes and Neo-Traditional urban design.
This is one of many tours across the city, now in its 14th season, in celebration of National Preservation Month. The walking tours will be led by Preservation Greensboro’s executive director Benjamin Briggs. Learn about the history of this well-preserved section of our city center, parts of which date to the era when Greensborough remained the accepted spelling of the city! You will gain insights on Neoclassical, Italianate, and Gothic Revival architecture of the past, and examine neo-contemporary styles by Duany Plater-Zybert Architects. Tours will take a little over an hour depending on questions.
This tour meets in front of the Cascade Saloon, 408-410 South Elm Street, cancelled in case of rain. Wear comfortable shoes! This event is FREE.
