Social Equity in History Walking Tour

For a city of its size in the American South, Greensboro has a remarkable history of social equity expressed in our built environment that spans more than 100 years. Perhaps those of tolerant Quaker and Jewish faith provided Greensboro’s disenfranchised citizens with community allies. In addition, Greensboro also had a strong “youth culture” from its five colleges and universities that fueled fresh perspectives and new ideas to the South. This social equity tour will visit sites, touchstones, and turning points among Greensboro’s historically marginalized communities, including Women, Blacks, Jews, and LGBTQ+ citizens. The tour primarily focuses on buildings and places within blocks of our center city with historical associations that will allow tour-goers to learn more about alternative story-lines in our city’s history.

This is our 18th season of walking tours that are FREE to the community (but we hope you will consider joining as a member). This tour meets in front of the International Civil Rights Center and Museum and will take 60 to 90 minutes. Canceled in case of rain/thunder — updates will be made on our social media.
