Governor Jim Martin and John Hood Book Signing (Public)
January 11, 2016 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
The discourse of politics is alive and well in the halls of Blandwood! Join us for a book signing of “Catalyst: Jim Martin and the Rise of North Carolina Republicans” (John F. Blair, Publisher). Governor Jim Martin’s biography is written by John Hood, the chairman of the conservative John Locke Foundation in Raleigh. A chemistry major at Davidson College later earned a doctorate at Princeton before he returned to Davidson, where he launched a career as a popular professor. He was drawn to politics in 1966 when he was elected to the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners. A year later, he was chairman. In that office, Martin began to practice what Hood calls “constructive conservatism.” He pushed for more openness in local government, met with school board counterparts to assess education needs and supported efforts to extend water and sewer lines to rural areas to promote development. Martin developed a pragmatic approach to governing, balancing taxes with accountability that took him all the way to the governor’s office.
Meet Governor Jim Martin and John Hood at the historic homeplace of Governor John Motley Morehead in downtown Greensboro. This event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for sale at the event, credit cards accepted.
