Greensboro to Raleigh: The Governor and the Architect
April 4, 2016 @ 9:30 am - 5:00 pm
Join us for a special tour to our State Capital! $60 per person, all costs included.
Governor Morehead left a strong legacy when he returned to Blandwood from his two terms of leadership in Raleigh. Come with us to trace the legacy of Morehead, and modern governorship with a carefully tailored tour.
We depart Blandwood Mansion at 9:30 am and travel by comfortable motor coach to Raleigh. There, we will be guided on a behind-the-ropes tour of the State Capitol designed by architect Alexander Jackson Davis – the architect who designed Blandwood in 1844!
The Capitol tour will include the primary floor including the Rotunda and a peek inside the Govenrnor’s Office (featuring furnishings of the 1840-1865 period including pieces believed to have been crafted by Thomas Day of Caswell County). On the upper floors we will explore the House of Representative Chamber, the Senate Chamber and the West Hall Committee Room and the State Library with particupar focus on the signature design elements of architect Davis.
In the Capitol we will be treated to a catered lunch – a rare treat not traditionally available to the public
Next, we will explore the current Executive Mansion, not yet built in the days of Morehead and Davis, but highly reminiscent of Blandwood. Highlights will include paintings and furniture crafted by local artisans including a cellarette that belonged to Governor Morehead and was used in the previous Governor’s Palace.
